Contemporary Style

« Back to Project List

Project Goal: To create connections between the main residence, the guest house, and the pool house by providing a shared gathering space and landscape that is functional and beautiful while complimenting the style and scale of the architecture.

Project Description: Nestled between bay views on the the east and west sides, this home is a beautiful example of contemporary architecture. Magma was hired to re-design the original landscape that was completed after the residence was built. Our goal of creating a landscape that truly connected the house to the environment around it was accomplished in the backyard by taking advantage of a slight slope and building a sunken patio (natural cleft, full color bluestone) that can accommodate dining, enjoying the fire pit, and relaxing with friends. Flanked by a natural stone wall on the east side of the patio and on the west side by large stepping stones that lead out to the lawn, the patio feels enclosed and welcoming while still inviting play into the vast lawn beyond. Stepping stones through the lawn were used as a direct connection to the house and are set throughout the lawn as visual connections to the overall space. In the front yard, a new curvilinear walkway, installed with the same bluestone pavers, gives visitors a clear direction to the front door. The beach pebble edge is great detail but also serves as a place to put the outdoor lighting (keeping it protected from lawn mowers). Plantings throughout the site connect all the hardscape spaces to the residence and soften the hard lines of the stone. A combination of native grasses and perennials and structural shrubs provide year-round interest.
