Pawtucket Proud Day June 10, 2009

A Bird's Eye View of the Project Site

Part of our mission as a company has been to get involved in the local community here in Pawtucket.  In April, we connected with the Pawtucket Foundation in an effort to make this happen. For years now, the Foundation has put together a great event called "Pawtucket Proud Day." It's a day dedicated to getting local businesses to "donate" their employees for a day to clean-up and beautify areas in the city. We got involved with the Tolman High School Project. The idea was to reclaim this river front property from the invasive weeds, vines, and trees that had taken it over. Eventually the site will be part of a much larger project which will include a bike path, extensive plantings, and a place for people to sit and enjoy the area. For the beginning phases, we have completed a planting plan that we hope will be implemented in stages, before the major construction is anticipated to happen. The first steps that were taken to make this project happen were implemented by the city. They were instrumental in getting the initial brush clearing and tree pruning done. Really, without their support, we would not have gotten as far as we did today. I have to give another "shout out" to Mark House of Resource Controls.  Mark's enthusiasm and willingness to coordinate the project (and dig holes,  and move trees, etc.) really made the project run smoothly.

Today's goal was to use our volunteers to continue clearing the site and plant trees along the riverfront. This was no small task. Aside from the amount of brush that still needed to be cleared, we had to negotiate the trees down an incredibly steep slope. We planted red maple and ash trees that were provided by Central Nurseries. Despite the large size of the trees and the daunting task of getting them into place, the volunteers on this site worked enthusiastically and incredibly hard to help us reach our goal. What a day! It's really amazing what you can get done when you have a group of people all working towards the same goal. Nice job to everyone who participated!
